J.Cole - G.O.M.D Analysis (REVISION)

Content
G.O.M.D is a song written by American rapper J.Cole. This song is very unique as it is not your average rap song. In this song, Cole wanted people to get of his case and let him do what he wanted to do. G.O.M.D stands for "Get Of My Di*K" which shows he does not care about what people think about him.

Theme/Genre
The music video plays a narrative. J.Cole represents a house slave around the time of slavery. During the video, Cole takes it upon himself to cause a uprising/revolution against the white-owned plantation, going against them. The uprising starts of when Cole finds the keys to gun closet, opening it and giving them to the slaves, making them have power over the slavemasters.

Star
J.Cole is the main character in the music video. the camera is mainly on him and J.Cole is the one who is rapping to the song. J.Cole plays a house slave. i believe he plays this role in the narrative working in the house as he is part white, but still black making him the house slave.

Representation
The music video is very different to other videos he has made because G.O.M.D is based on a historical event. The time of slavery was one of the worst periods in history. For some, the music video is very touching as racism stills occurs in todays world. In todays day and age there is still a division between whites and black. Black people today can be still seen inferior to whites which can be shown in social media and even general public. This music video is mainly about the need for unity and togetherness for the black community.
Clearly from the music video, we can see that is represents slavery. During slavery, the black slaves were assigned to work outside for the whites. At the start of the video, the slave masters are seen having power over the slaves. We can see this when they are riding horses, looking over the slaves making sure they are doing work. Furthermore, the masters are shouting at them and one of them is seen even kicking one of the slaves for humour. This is a good representation about slavery as this is what is was like back around the 18th century of slavery. This is usually what would happen around those times.

Technical codes
Throughout the video, there are close ups, extreme close ups. medium, long and establish shots. Firstly, at the start of the video there are many close up shots of the slaves (0:15 - 0:34). The purpose of the close ups is to create emotion. the close ups are mainly of the slaves show how hard they are working. its also close up when the slavemasters are picking on them for pleasure. this creates a sense that we should have sympathy for the slaves.
An extreme close up in the music video is when the camera is pointing at the keys on the floor (2:04). this is used to draw attention or suspense to something important in the narrative or something that will happen in the music video.
An establish shot in the video is when the camera is pointed at the slavemasters and the slaves at the same time (3:30). this type of shot is important because it tells or shows the audience what will take place or what will happen. from this the audience should establish what will happen next in the narrative. this scene in the video is when the slaves ambush the slave masters holding them at gun point.
Furthermore, they go on to destroy the plantation house. From these medium shots, it shows the built up anger and frustration that he slaves have held in.
The last scenes in the video shows the women doing an African tribal dance which could show that they are representing who they are and not feeling ashamed. It can also suggest that they are not forgetting where they came from.
Finally, the medium shots at the end of the video, we can see a division between three white slave masters and a group of black slaves. From this, we can clearly see that this shows a division between white people and black people in modern day life.

Visual codes
throughout the video, we can see that the main visual code is the clothing. the characters are all wearing clothes based to the theme slavery. for example, we can see that the slavemasters are wearing suits, shirts. the slaves are wearing tattered clothing.
there are some objects in the video which can suggest something. throughout the video (1:53 to be specific), their is a alcohol bottle. this could represent rich and wealth that the slavemasters own. also, they carry guns and muskets around with them to suggest power that they have.
Moving on, at (0:39 - 0:48), there are of the women slaves in the house. From their facial expressions, we can see that their not happy and uncomfortable when Cole has his hands on them. Because Cole is in a higher status than the women workers so there is no surprise that they do not want him near them.
