Ethncity - In Print Media
Ethnicity can be found in music, adverts, TV and even in print media. This is a perfect example of where ethnicity is shown.
The title "Asian Women" tells us which ethnic and culture the cover expresses. The front cover shows a model dressed up as a stereotypical Asian women. The model is wearing a sari, bindi, traditional jewellery and we can see a tattoo on her leg. She is shown to have a strong pose to show confidence and to look successful. The model is not underdressed meaning that this cover is meant for women. She is not revealing any body parts meaning that this type of magazine is not for men. Although this magazine may be for Asian women only, at the top of the magazine it states "The magazine for the women". This clearly tells us this magazine is for all women around the world. Furthermore, the magazine states "Who wants the world". This shows that this magazine could be about women empowerment.
The model seems like a normal traditional Asian women, but she is not. This is where exoticism enters. Firstly, we can see that the model for the magazine cover is Alesha Dixon, an afro Jamaican and half English singer and model. She is being portrayed as a stereotypic Asian women wearing traditional clothing and jewellery. Clearly we can see that she stands out by all the bright colours. This links to tokenism as Dixon is not Asian but portraying one to give Asian women a better image to the public and society.
All over the magazine cover, they are statements showing women empowerment and inspiration. "Tweet yourself a job" meaning that you should show you success to others and make people know how successful you are. The cover also states "Maybe I should marry an Asian man". This suggests that all Asian women have to get married to an Asian man. It could also imply that all women should get married to an Asian man because of wealth. Lastly, the line "Make him WANT YOU" states that women must try to do anything to attract men. An example of this is that the model is good looking and she is wearing a lot of jewellery.
